Emperor penguins lay eggs in May & June, then the males take charge of the egg. No nest  ~ the egg is incubated on the feet of the parents, covered by a special fold of abdominal skin. Mother then set off back to sea & does not return until July. Dads sit huddled together with their valuable eggs throughout the dark weeks & months of the Antarctic night. Average temps run  -4°F ~ - 58°F with wind gusts up to 124 mph. They don't eat, they sit & protect until their mate returns to relieve…

Jao Camp - Hallowed species such as Pel's Fishing-Owl and Slaty Egret are found alongside more conspicuous and commonly seen Coppery-tailed Coucal, Pygmy Goose, while the specialised African Skimmer (from which Wilderness Safaris takes its logo) may be seen on the larger lagoons and channels in the Jao Concession.
