William Flinders Petrie  The outstanding nineteenth century archaeologist of Stonehenge. His work included carful recording and publication and the most accurate survey of Stonehenge to date. He went on to develop a system for dating archaeological remains based on pottery finds, the primary archaeological dating method before Carbon 14 Dating - and to be Britain's first professor of Egyptology.
