Irena Sendler got permission to work in a Warsaw Ghetto as a plumber. She courageously smuggled babies in her tool box and carried larger children in a sack. She trained her dog to bark when Nazis were near. She saved 2500 children.

Hannah Szenes: Hungary    July 17, 1921 – November 7, 1944  Hannah Szenes was a paratrooper for the British Special Operations Executive.  The mission was to enter Yugoslavia to rescue several Jews who were being prepared for deportation to Auschwitz.  Unfortunately, she was caught, imprisoned, tortured & interrogated.  Regardless of the torment inflicted upon her, Hannah didn’t crack.  Instead, she wrote poetry & kept a diary until her execution by firing squad.

Hannah Szenes joined the British Army and volunteered to be parachuted into Europe to help the Allied efforts in Europe and establish contact with partisan resistance fighters in an attempt to aid beleaguered Jewish communities.

Mala Zimetbaum and Edward (Edek) Galinski - also known as Romeo and Juliet from Birkenau. A Jewish woman, Mala, and Polish political prisoner, Edek – both arrested and sent to Auschwitz. They met, they fall in love in a place which was all about death and destruction. Together, they escaped in June 1944 to a nearby town. Soon after their escape, Edek watched from a distance as Mala was arrested in a store where she was trying to buy bread. Edek turned himself in, and both were executed.
