DR - Larry Romine, 45, was sentenced to die in April 1982 in Pickens County for the shotgun slayings of his parents, Roy Lee, 48, and Aville R. Romine, 50. Police say robbery was the motive for the March 19, 1991, double homicide. Romine's death sentence was reversed by the Georgia Supreme Court in June 1983, but he was resentenced to death again in August 1985.

Marie Scott March 14, 1914.  A white mob of at least a dozen males, yanked 17 yo Marie Scott from jail, threw a rope over her head as she screamed & hung her from a telephone pole in Wagoner County, OK. A few days earlier, 2 drunken white men broke Into her home as she was dressing. They locked themselves in her room & raped her. Her brother hearing her screams for help, kicked down the door, killed 1 guy & ran. The white mob couldn't her brother so they lynched her.

In 1854, the first known police matrons (also called jail matrons) were hired by New York City to search and guard female prisoners, but they were civilians with no law enforcement powers.  Sarah Hill became the second police matron in Davenport, Iowa, hired in 1893. She worked for 27 years to care for female criminals and their children.
