Daisaku Ikeda (born January 2, 1928, Japan) founder and president of Soka Gakkai International (SGI), international offshoot of Soka Gakkai, Japanese new religious movement informed by teachings of Nichiren: has more than 12 million members. In 1996, he was described in a Los Angeles Times: "puzzle of conflicting perceptions; Japan's most powerful man; threat to democracy; inspired teacher; man of deep learning."
