Japanese Zakuri silk reel, 座繰り, Edo period, with itomaki bobbins, 糸巻き

Antique Japanese Zakuri, 座繰り, used to reel silk thread from cocoons. A great display piece! There is no marking on the wood except on the itomaki, 糸巻き, (bobbin, also called itowaku 糸枠 or kiwaku き枠), but zakuris were produced during the Edo period in Japan until the 1920s. The gear on the removable axle is the one that came with it, but it is smaller than it should be to turn correctly without sliding off the gear below it.
