New research has found that smoking may erase the male sex chromosome. In fact, male smokers are up to four times more likely to have blood cells with no Y chromosome than nonsmokers. That's bad news: Y chromosome loss has been linked to a shorter life span as well as a higher risk of cancer.

Smoking appears to remove Y chromosomes (pictured) from blood cells.

For the first time, researchers in the US have managed to flip the gender of the brains of newborn rats, causing physically female rodents to behave like males. The research suggests that neurological sex is more flexible than once thought. Interesting.

The common cold virus can reproduce itself more efficiently in the cooler temperatures found inside the nose than at core body temperature, according to a new study. This finding may confirm the popular yet contested notion that people are more likely to catch a cold in cool-weather conditions.

Over the past several years, research on bacteria in the digestive tract (gut microbiome) has confirmed the major role they play in our health. An international consortium has developed the most complete database of microbial genes ever created. The catalogue features nearly ten million genes and will constitute a reference for all research on gut bacteria. http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2014/11/141124125127.htm

Cataloguing 10 million human gut microbial genes: Unparalleled accomplishment
