The Interborough Subway's Power House was built in NYC in 1904 and is the biggest steam power generating plant ever built. It is located at 11th Ave and 57th St and covers 432,000 sq feet, much of it 100s of feet underground. The building is ornate. It was a testament of genius, daring and imagination. It could generate 132,000 horsepower using 18,000 tons of coal per day. Though it has not operated in decades it could be started up again. Naturally, ConEdison wants to tear it down.
