According to local lore, the Major Oak's hollow trunk was used as a hideout by Robin Hood’s men. It first known as the Cockpen tree - yes the tree was used to store chickens! Estimated weight 23 Tons, circumference 10 meters, and a spread of 28 meters and estimated to be 800-1000 years old. The tree is a Pedunculate Oak; the enormity of the tree was likely the result of pollarding, (the joining of two or more saplings to form a more substantial tree body).

The Major Oak set in Sherwood Forest (Edwinstowe) on grounds where Robin Hood is said to have spent many of his legendary days.
