La Conciergerie, once a palace became a French prison in 1391. It became internationally famous as the "antechamber to the guillotine" during the Reign of Terror, the bloodiest phase of the French Revolution. It housed the Revolutionary Tribunal as well as up to 1,200 male and female prisoners at a time. Marie Antoinette spent the last days of her life here. Decommisioned in 1914 it is now houses the Palais de Justice law courts.
