Nelumbo nucifera, also known as Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India or simply lotus, has been observed maintaining a temperature of 30鈥?6掳C even when the air temperature dropped as low as 10掳C. This process is known as thermoregulation and the lotus is not the only heat-producing plant. Scientists suspect the flowers do this to attract coldblooded insect pollinators. Individual lotus plants can live for over a thousand years and can revive after stasis. Image: T.Voekler
Lotus blossoms differ from a lily by their height off the water. Whereas lilies can rest on the water or just above, lotus can rise several feet above. As a lotus is able to emerge from muddy waters, un-spoilt and pure, it's considered to represent a wise and spiritually enlightened quality in a person; and is a very important symbol in Hinduism, Buddhism, as it was for the ancient Egyptians.
