This looked like it was made of tin foil and straws and yet it took man to the moon and back, and even saved lives during the Apollo 13 mission.

Eagle Lander from Apollo Moon Mission; an amazing bit of engineering in its day. I wonder how we will go back to the moon.

Apollo 13 - the mission where there was an explosion in the Command Module. The lunar landing was aborted and the Lunar Module was then used to propel the astronauts back to Earth.

April 11, 1970, Apollo 13 lifted off with Cdr Jim Lovell, CM Pilot Jack Swigert and LM Pilot Fred Haise. Two days later an oxygen tank exploded, scrubbing the lunar landing and putting the crew in jeopardy. The crew used their lunar module as a "lifeboat," and even rigged an adapter so than a command module "air scrubber" would work in the lunar module, preventing a dangerous buildup of carbon dioxide. The mission ended safely when the crew splashed down on April 17, 1970

Apollo 9 was the third manned mission in the United States Apollo space program and the first flight of the Command/Service Module (CSM) with the Lunar Module (LM). Its three-person crew, consisting of Commander James McDivitt, Command Module Pilot David Scott, and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart, tested several aspects critical to landing on the Moon, including the LM engines, backpack life support systems, navigation systems, and docking maneuvers.
