Alton Castle, nr Cheadle, Staffordshire. Designed by A.W. Pugin for the 16th Earl of Shrewsbury, 1847-51. It stands on a cliff-top next to the Hospital of St John (1840-44) built by Pugin for the same patron. "Who, if anyone, Lord Shrewsbury intended to live in the castle remains obscure" (Girouard). It is now a convent school.
