The 1938 Hurricane hit New England just south of Rhode Island allowing the counterclockwise storm surge to go right up Narragansett Bay. Sustained winds of 125mph with gusts up to 186mph with a 16 foot storm surge destroyed coastal Rhode Island and flooded Providence. 600 People died and 4,500 were injured in total everywhere it hit. Still one of the worst disasters in US history.
