Period art suggests that the garment dates to the second quarter of the 15th century ( … okay, would have been the last days of Fiore at best!). It is one of two such extant examples of almost identical make that may have been kept in the city armoury. The second piece is on public display in the Lübeck Holsten Gate Museum. A third one from Stendal appears to have been lost, probably during or after WW II. Only an old photograph of it remains.

Wire headdress: late 15th-early 16th century   Excavations in London yeilded a number of brass wire headdress frames, of the kind concealed under fabric and worn by all but the poorest. Those with a diamond or angular profile were especially fashionable in the late 1400s and early 1500s. The curved frame or 'French hood' seems to have been worn concurrently with the gable types throughout the 1520s and 30s, but features more prominently in portraits from the fourth decade  Date 1460 AD-1550…
