Inmates are escorted onto a boat to be transferred to another prison: On March 21, 1963, Alcatraz closed after 29 years as a federal prison. The government maintains it did not close the prison because of the disappearance of Morris and the Anglins, but rather due to the high cost of running the joint. Alcatraz was reportedly nearly three times more expensive to operate than any other federal prison.
