On September 13, 1971 the Attica Prison Riot ended when State Troopers and the National Guard overcame the prisoners with tear gas and fired shotguns into the smoke. By the time the facility was retaken, nine hostages and 29 inmates had been killed, with a tenth hostage dying later. The aftermath of the riot called for prison reform, especially in the treatment of minority inmates who were becoming a majority in several state correctional facilities across America. #TodayInBlackHistory
