Allen West's Cell B-140. As West failed to escape with Morris and the Anglin brothers he had no choice but to remain in his cell until the escape was discovered the next morning. After the escape was discovered he gave several interviews to the FBI and prison authorities, during which he provided full details of the escape plan, possibly as part of a plea bargaining strategy. West was never charged for trying to escape from Alcatraz
Inmates are escorted onto a boat to be transferred to another prison: On March 21, 1963, Alcatraz closed after 29 years as a federal prison. The government maintains it did not close the prison because of the disappearance of Morris and the Anglins, but rather due to the high cost of running the joint. Alcatraz was reportedly nearly three times more expensive to operate than any other federal prison.
