Mackay. This tartan was recorded prior to the launch of The Scottish Register of Tartans. This sett is taken from the records of Messrs Bolingbroke and Jones of Norwich, who were weavers around 1870. The setts were generally known by number only and names have been derived from other sources. Norwich Collection is in the Scottish Tartans Society Archive.

+~+~+~ Culloden Tartan ~+~+~+  This tartan is well known to many, not only because of its vivid colouring but also because of the story surrounding its origin which associated it with the famous battle at Culloden Moor in 1746, thus making it one of the oldest surviving tartan designs.   Scots fought on both sides and the battle was very emotional as the Clans lost their right to wear their plaid colors, play the bagpipes or publicly meet as a family group.
