The flooded crypt at Winchester Cathedral, England. This low-vaulted stone crypt, which floods in rainy months, dates from the 11th century, the earliest phase of building the Cathedral, shown here with Antony Gormley’s life-size sculpture of a solitary man, Sound II, seen from a distance, between the massive vaults and their reflections. These are some of the prettiest shadow boxes I have ever seen. I have loved this form of art since I was small, felt it had enormous potential for real magic, but have so rarely seen something truly special.
Jeppe Hien, 360º ILLUSION: two mirrors, each approximately six by sixteen feet, connected at a 90º angle, producing a double reflection which appears to rotate. The industrialized appareance is created through the geometric architecture that interlaces across the composition. From an artistic perspective, initially the artwork appears to be a painting collaged with photography until the realism is revealed. I enjoy how the composition is distorted through two attractive focal points.
