In 2009, Gamespot held a "Best Hero" bracketed tournament to determine who the greatest video game hero of all time was.  The winner was...this guy.  Unlike most first-person shooter leads, Dr. Gordon Freeman is a MIT Graduate with no combat experience prior to the events of the Half-Life series, but next thing you know, he becomes humanity's last hope against alien invasion.    He also never talks and is never seen in his games since they have no cutscenes.  Way to leave him ambiguous.
