Welcoming Autumn to the Smoky Mountains: Autumn is the perfect season for taking a vacation in the Smokies because of the vibrantly colored leaves that shine on Smoky Mountain trees! The Great Smoky Mountains are a perfect place to gaze at the beauty of Fall. At the higher elevations, displays of color can begin as early as the middle of September.
This park was commissioned on August 19, 1890, making it the nation's first and largest National Military Park. Stroll the grounds on the free self-guided tour and you'll see cannons and monuments to soldiers on both sides. Or go the museum, where you can get a guided tour, examine the Fuller gun collection, and watch a movie about one of the longest and bloodiest battles fought during the Civil War.
