A further note on bringing birds into the garden.  Pictured above is Banksia integrifolia, not only brilliant for nectar feeding but also seed eaters giving you are more diverse range of birds in the garden.  This small tree often called the Coastal Banksia grows in a wide range of soils,  as long as the drainage is decent.  All along the East Coast of Australia this tree makes a wonderful statement.
