Old tapestry bearing an image of Mountain Mary. Born in 1746 in Frankfurt, Germany, Anna Maria Jung (Young) immigrated to Philadelphia at the time of the American Revolution. Known as Mountain Mary, she used teas, salves and poultices to heal the sick in eastern Berks County and beyond. Prayers, rituals, incantations and the laying on of hands were part of her healing method. Mary died on Nov. 16, 1819. More than 1,000 attended the funeral of the so-called Highland Healer.
