Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest I recently bought a new lens with the intention of trying it out for astrophotography in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, a protected area high in the White Mountains in Inyo County in eastern California. This was an early test shot from when we arrived, and I liked the faintest poof of pink clouds at the horizon. www.optimalfocusphotography.com

My first successful attempt at hiking to Phantom Falls in North Table Mountain was a satisfying one. The falls had ample waterflow, and I was rewarded with a rainbow caused by the wind-blown spray and the afternoon sun. The rainbow appeared to be rising from the tree canopy below, and disappeared soon after when the sun dipped behind a cloud. The waterfall is 164 feet high and runs off the edge of Coal Canyon, in front of a grotto.

Located in the Owens River valley of the eastern Sierra, lies Hot Creek Geological Site, where the Mammoth River joins scalding waters heated by magma roughly 3 miles from the surface at Hot Creek. Apparently, trout love these warm waters because this is one of the best trout fishing locations in the eastern Sierra. This beautiful location is home to turquoise pools and thermal springs reaching up to 200 degrees. I didn't capture dramatic clouds or rising steam as I had hoped, but this is...
