In 1947 Princess Elizabeth married Prince Philip Mountbatten of Greece and Denmark. She ascended to the throne and became Queen Elizabeth II in 1952 upon the death of her father, King George VI.  Her royal wedding gown was designed by Norman Hartnell. It was silk and satin, embroidered with 10,000 seed pearls (imported from the US) crystal beads in garlands of star-shaped lily heads, white York roses with orange blossoms and heads of wheat (symbol of fertility), and a 15' silk tulle train.
