Selkies are said to live as seals in the sea but shed their skin to become human on land. The legend is common in Orkney and Shetland. Male selkies are described as being very handsome in their human form, and having great seductive powers over human women. They typically seek married women waiting for their fishermen husbands. Female selkies can be 'caught' and married in human form by hiding their seal skins, but if she finds her skin she will immediately return to her true home. <:((((><(

According to a myth, the gods tie an invisible red string around the ankles of those that are destined to meet each other in a certain situation or help each other in a certain way. Often, in Japanese culture, it is thought to be tied around the little finger. The two people connected by the red thread are destined lovers, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. This magical cord may stretch or tangle, but never break.
