Fossil Creek flows from its source, at Fossil Springs, 14 miles to its confluence with the Verde River downstream of the historic and decommissioned Childs power plant. Fossil Creek is one of two Wild and Scenic rivers in Arizona.

Just down the road from the Grand Canyon, about 50,000 years ago, there was a large meteor that impacted the earth and created a crater 4000 feet wide and about 600 feet deep. The impact would have scared the wits out of the woolly mammoths and giant sloths that were roaming the area at that time. Today, we call that impact site, Meteor Crater. It was designated a National Natural Landmark, in 1967.
