"I could see the lights of the ship starting to go under water, then soundlessly, perhaps a mile away, it just went down. It was gone. Oh yes, the sky was very black and the stars were very bright. They told me the people in the water were singing, but I knew they were screaming." Madeleine Mellinger in a Toronto Star interview, April 15, 1974, Titanic survivor
Roberta Elizabeth Mary Maioni (known as "Cissy") was a maid traveling 1st class on the Titanic with her employer, Countess Lucy Rothes. Roberta fell in love with steward who was working on the ship. On the night of the sinking, he gave her his life jacket, helped her into a lifeboat and pressed his official White Star liner badge into her hand, before going down with the ship. Seen in full-length, we can appreciate how far Downton fashion has developed since the show began in 1912. Note the rising hems (both Lady Mary and her sister are showing their ankles, an unthinkable act just 10 years before) and the lowering waist bands, plus an injection of seasonal colour and Lady Edith's fabulous cloche hat.
Unknown young Edwardian woman. I want to share a fabulous website. It has vintage TOC videos (great fun), detailed TOC fashion info, and links to YouTube videos that show you how to recreate Victorian and Edwardian hairstyles - without needing 3 feet of hair to work with.
