GLADYS BENTLEY (1907-1960) began her career singing and playing piano at rent parties and the legendary speakeasies of "Jungle Alley" at 133rd. She appeared at Harry Hansberry's "Clam House" on 133rd Street, one of New York City's most notorious gay speakeasies, in the 1920s, and headlined in the early thirties at Harlem's Ubangi Club, where she was backed up by a chorus line of drag queens. She played piano and sang lyrics to popular tunes of the day in a deep, growling voice.

Green Umbrella Revives Dada Film-In a period when dance historians are industriously re-creating significant "lost " works, CalArts forces have made an oblique contribution with the restoration of "Ballet Mecanique," landmark Dada film by Dudley Murqhy, Fernand Leger Ray, with music by George Antheil.The results of the cinematic effort led by William Moritz, were shown for the first time on May 8th 1989 as a concert at Japan America Theatre by the New CalArts 20th-Century Players.
