The Halls of the Crusades in the Palace of Versailles, just outside Paris, house an exhibition called Treasure of the Holy Sepulchre. Gifts from European Royal Courts to Jerusalem from 16th April to 14th July.
Godfrey de Saint-Omer and eight other knights was the first group of knights in the Order. They had few financial resources and relied on donations to survive. Their emblem was of two knights riding on a single horse, emphasising the Order's poverty. Around 1129 the Order was officially endorsed by the Catholic Church. History 18 - The Knights Templars were, quite literally, warrior monks - men who had taken holy orders and monastic vows but who were also trained in the arts of war. When not fighting, a Templar lived a life similar to that of any other monk. When he joined the Order he took vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. He spent the day in attending holy offices, praying and fasting.
