Porokoru Patapu (John) Pohe was the first Maori pilot in the RNZAF. Nicknamed 'Lucky Johnny', he was a WWII hero who flew an amazing 22 missions, was involved in the legendary 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III, and insisted on removing his blindfold when he faced a German firing squad.

Bram van der Stok, who has died in Hawaii aged was one of only three Allied airmen prisoners of war to make the 'home run' to Britain after the 'Great Escape' from Stalag Luft III.

Flight Lieutenant Les Brodrick , who has died aged 91, was one of the 76 men to escape from Stalag Luft III during “The Great Escape”, which resulted in the murder of 50 RAF officers on the direct orders of Hitler.

Of the 76 POWs who broke out of Stalag Luft III, only three made it all the way to freedom.

Lamason was senior officer of a group of 168 captured Allied airmen who were taken by train to Buchenwald concentration camp.  At Buchenwald, the airmen were fully shaved, starved, denied shoes, and for three weeks forced to sleep outside without shelter. He took control, instilled a level of military discipline & bearing.  Lamason secretly got word to the Luftwaffe & 7 days before their scheduled execution, 156 of the 168 POWs were transferred to Stalag Luft III, thus saving their lives.
