Major General Dan Pienaar, 1942.  General Pienaar with his 1 South African Division successfully took part in major battles during the North African Campaign, and was twice awarded the DSO. Sadly he was killed on the 19th December 1942 when his aircraft crashed into Lake Victoria at Kisumu while returning to South Africa.
