The Veil Nebula, segment This is a small portion of the Veil Nebula — the shattered remains of a supernova that exploded thousands of years ago.

A New Era for Supernova 1987A Supernova 1987A was discovered in 1987 within the Large Magellanic Cloud, a neighboring galaxy to our Milky Way. The bright ring around the central region of the exploded star is composed of material ejected by the star about 20,000 years before its demise. Clouds of hydrogen gas surround the supernova, fueling a firestorm of star birth. http://hubblesite.org/image/3987/news_release/2017-08

The explosion of this star, visible to the naked eye, is one of the most important astronomical eve.

The glowing wisps of Nebula NGC 6979 resulted from a SN, the explosion of a massive star, over 5000 yrs ago. The ejected stellar gas continuously collides w/gas and dust clouds of the surrounding interstellar medium, causing complex structures/ colors. The nebula makes up part of the Cygnus Loop, along w/Pickering's Triangular Wisp and the well-known Veil Nebula. Image released Feb 2014

A ribbon of gas, a very thin section of a supernova remnant caused by a stellar explosion that occurred more than 1,000 years ago, floats in our galaxy. The supernova that created it was probably the brightest star ever seen by humans.

The Veil Nebula is part of a large supernova remnant called the Cygnus Loop. Different colors correspond to different wavelengths of light.
