Fiji: The Kava Ceremony. An important part of Fijian tradition, kava is a mildly narcotic root that is dried and pounded into a fine power, then prepared like cold tea. It can be served both formally, with a strict ceremony, or informally when people come to visit. All guests to a village present a “sevu sevu” of kava, an offering similar to a bottle of wine of a bunch of flowers when you go to dinner at someone’s home.
