c. 1870 Mid 19th Century French Sedan Chair. Sedan chairs were largely out of favor by then so it is curious that this is dated 1870. Sedan chairs, in use until the 19th century, were accompanied at night by link-boys who carried torches. Where possible, the link boys escorted the fares to the chairmen, the passengers then being delivered to the door of their lodgings.

The domed leather roof above a scrolling foliate-carved frame, the panels carved with arabesques, grotesque masks and beasts, above glazed panels painted with putti, floral swags and caryatids, the interior with red velvet lining centred by a needlework panel depicting a unicorn and monstrance.
