d'Auvergne. A statue to the "beast of Gevaudan", on one of the plateaux of Margareide, France.A string of attacks by a wolf like beast occurred in the Auvergne & South Dordogne regions between 1764 - 1767,killing an estimated 100 people. Louis XV took an interest personally & sent troops to search & kill the beast. It caused mass panic, & theories ranged from starving wolves to the inevitable werewolves. Timing & distance show that there must have been more than one creature.
