Two orcas swim by as MBARI's R/V Rachel Carson works in the background. This photo was shot last spring from a small boat in the Monterey Bay. Most orcas, or killer whales, eat fish but the orcas that visit Monterey Bay dine on marine mammals. They are part of the “transient” population of orcas that travel between Washington and Monterey, hunting for sea lions, juvenile elephant seals and gray whale calves in coastal waters. They show up unpredictably in Monterey Bay throughout the year…
