Mother Blackbird

My father died of a heart attack in June; my girlfriend got a job and went east in July; and, by August, I didn’t know if I was alive. I was living in a white house on Thames Court with Cynthia and Tim, two college kids from Idaho. I was getting drunk on Black Velvet, screaming, threatening people in bars. Crying sometimes, in my room, when I was alone. Phoning my mother. Phoning people I used to know and apologizing for things that happened years ago, or things I only thought had…

This reminds me of the trial in to kill a mocking bird. The court house is packed and it is all white people on the first floor. The people look very interested and scared.

During August, Leaming's Run Gardens becomes a mecca for ruby-throated hummingbirds who come to feed before they migrate south on their long annual journey. Hummingbirds sometimes stay until mid-September. 1845 Route 9 North Cape May Court House, NJ (609) 465-5871
