John Bauer (1882-1918) was a Swedish illustrator and painter. His life ended tragically when he, his wife and young son drowned in a ferry accident. Bauer's influence can be seen in later works by the illustrators Sulamith Wülfing, Kay Nielsen, Brian Froud and Rebecca Guay. His works were mostly square or almost square. He was mentioned in issue 64 of Neil Gaiman's "Sandman".
