Every chateau had a chamber (or in the case of Vaux-le-Vicomte, an entire wing) for the King, should he visit. This bedroom, designed for Louis XIV, was never used.

Palazzo Barbaro Gothic Palace on the Grand Canal, bought in the 19th century by American Daniel Sargent Curtis, who preserved and maintained the palace as much as possible to its original form. Daniel & Ariana Curtis hosted intellectuals and artists, among them John Singer Sargent, a relative of Daniel, James Abbott Whistler, Claude Monet, Henry James (who wrote part of his Aspern Papers here) and Isabella Stewart Gardner.
