The Hadron Calorimeter (HCAL) measures the energy of hadrons, particles made of quarks and gluons (for example protons, neutrons, pions and kaons). Additionally it provides indirect measurement of the presence of non-interacting, uncharged particles such as neutrinos.

CERN Replicates Post-Big-Bang Universe --"Quarks, Antiquarks and Gluons Over 4000 billion Degrees Temperature"

Massive CERN Photo. The unit to the left is the massive chamber (one of several) weighing between 7,000 and 12,500 ton impact chamber in which two protons collide emitting it products outward to be identified and analyzed by the outer layers of the collider. So that left unit fits into the right field unit when the proton collision occurs and all those layers of the field each identify different particle and energy types.

I saw a documentary yesterday called "Particle Fever." This doc was about "The God Particle" or "The Higgins." I decided to feature some #AMAZINGPHOTOS of what they were talking about. What an amazing time for Physics and Humanity! ATLAS is a particle physics experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. The ATLAS detector is searching for new discoveries in the head-on collisions of protons of extraordinarily high energy. Here's a "Black Hole" event superimposed.

The CMS collaboration is having its last “CMS week” of the year this week. This evening at 6PM many of the attendees gathered in the big industrial building where the detector components have been assembled and lowered bit by bit in the pit, down into the cavern where the whole thing is being put together.
