In 1923 Princess Mary (who had volunteered as a nurse as you can see from this picture taken in 1920) and daughter of King George V, gave the RAFNS her royal patronage and the Service was renamed Princess Mary's Royal Air Force Nursing Service. Initially nurses from the PMRAFNS cared for patients in medical centres and rehab hospitals,as well as RAF and Military hospitals both in Britain and abroad. They nursed patients prior to evacuation from the battle zone.
