"Portrait of Jean Lannes" (J-B.P. Guérin, 1835). In the Château de Versailles. Born in 1769, son of a farmer, raised to the nobility as Duke of Montebello by Napoleon, the portrait depicts Lannes, as a 2nd Lt. (when he died of wounds suffered in 1809, he was a Marshal of France). One of the few persons privileged to address Napoleon as "tu" rather than "vous." A descendant, Philippe Lannes de Montebello, was, until 2008, the director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC.
