Penjing in the US National Bonsai and Penjing Museum. Tree Penjing (shumu penjing): A tree penjing focuses on the depiction of one or more trees and optionally other plants in a container, with the composition's dominant elements shaped by the creator through trimming, pruning, and wiring.
This large landscape on a 59" white marble slab created by Qingquan 'Brook' Zhao showcases one of three forms of penjing found in China today. The main artistic medium used here is rock; plants are used for accent only. This is a unique Chinese creation – it would and should never be called bonsai.
