S/L James AF "One-Armed Mac" MacLachlan of No 1 Squadron RAF stands besides Hurricane Mk IIc JX-Q at RAF Tangmere on 20 November 1941. The nose art on the all-black night fighter depicts the waving of a V sign with his amputated left arm that the 21-year-old pilot lost after being wounded in action on 16 February 1941 whilst being a flight commander with No 261 Squadron RAF in Malta.
