Song Dynasty. "Soleless" silk socks. Ancient socks were mostly made of different kinds of silk or gunny cloth. Unlike socks with soles, these silk-made socks are actually soleless sock legs. They were meant to match round-tipped, soft-soled shoes with low-cut uppers. And the sock legs above the shoes serve as an ornament. Socks of such style are quite rare in ancient socks. From a tomb of Southern Song Dynasty in Jintan of Jiangsu Province.
