Magic Glass Ltd - switchable smart glass and thermo-chromic glass. When electric current is applied, liquid crystals suspended in a di-electric medium in Magic glass™ panels are aligned in one direction allowing the incident light to pass through. When the electric current is switched OFF, the liquid crystals align randomly thus scattering light. This causes Magic Glass™ to turn translucent or private.
Rashad Alakbarov, who hails form Azerbaijan, is no stranger to the art scene having shown at the Venice Biennale in 07. A shadow master extraordinaire, Alakbarov uses various translucent items, such as empty water bottles and light bulbs, as well as scrap and random things like miniature aeroplanes and toys, in his creation process. Once they are all suspended and lit up, the results are astounding.
Nile Vine Hanging Sphere Lamp - Nature provides a maze of twigs, allowing the Nile Vine dropdown lamp to come indoors. The spherical design with its open interweave is all aglow with an interior translucent enclosure that casts subdued illumination in every direction. Suspended over a dining table or hanging above a corner reading chair, its abstract, randomly patterned maze becomes an art piece by day that brightens at night.
Smart glass - "Certain types of smart glass allow users to control the amount of light (and thereby heat) transmission. When activated, the glass changes from transparent to translucent, partially blocking light while maintaining a clear view through the glass. Another type of smart glass can provide complete privacy when activated. Smart glass technologies include electrochromic devices, suspended particle devices, micro-blinds and liquid crystal devices.
