If I shine a graph, my students know to find the equation. From there, students find the vertex, y-intercept, domain, range, zeros and equation (if a graph was given).

In the first activity students figure out for themselves what features of the function cause vertical asymptotes versus holes. In the second, they determine what characteristics of a rational function cause horizontal versus slant asymptotes.
