Landscape photography is one of the most popular photographic subjects and there are superb images everywhere to inspire us. But there are a few pitfalls that can trouble even experienced photographers. Don’t despair, though
Porthleven by Peter Lanyon. This is such a moving painting. It is topographic, showing the Cornish landscape from the air as if he has painted a map of the area. At the same time it depicts a mine shaft as if it was a slice through the earth, with building at the surface and shaft descending towards the centre of the earth. In 1919 there was a great mine disaster nearby and Lanyon saw this painting as a history painting comemorating those miners who died.
