Main Idea can be tricky for some kids! I used these sheets for morning work and had my kids confident about knowing what the main idea of a story was.

Teaching Main Idea:  Students traced their hand on a piece of construction paper. She had them choose a page in the reading story for the week and write the main idea on the palm. Then details went on each finger. Again, she emphasized that we need all of our fingers so they needed to find that many details or the hand wouldn't work.

This is a great way to introduce main idea. Students will trace and cut out their hand prints. On the palm of the hand, they will write down the main idea of their topic. On the fingers, they will write out information about the main idea.
