Helga Weiss documented the Nazi camps in drawings while also trying to imagine a life beyond horror. "One drawing marked the birthday of her friend Francka, showing them as babies in 1929, in a shared Terezin bunk in 1943, and in 1957, as mums." But Francka was to be killed at Auschwitz at 14. "'When I was in the camp my dreams were in black and white and grey, because life had no colour. But one day I had a vivid dream I was in a meadow.... The next day we were liberated.'"
